01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Carefully grilled one by one, hand-baked rice crackers reveal the deep, comforting aroma of toasted grain the more they are chewed. At Yahata Senbei in Meguro Ward's Higashiyama neighborhood, the shelves are lined with traditional rice crackers made in time-honored ways, popular for casual afternoon snacking as well as unpretentious neighborhood gifts.

A natural place to start is the norimaki cracker, where crisp dried seaweed and brisk soy sauce seasoning frame the natural sweetness of the rice, baked to an approachable crunch. The larger, firmly textured oni-arare can be savored straight from the bag or floated atop clear dashi broth or sweet red bean soup; as the cracker absorbs liquid, it softens while releasing a nutty, toasted warmth. Assorted sampler bags often appear on the counter, and seasonal items like mildly sweet chocolate-coated arare arrive around 2, adding variety throughout the year.

Except on Sundays, the shop operates from 8:00 in the morning until 18:30, making it a convenient stop during walks or shopping around the Ikejiri-Ohashi neighborhood. Cashless payments via PayPay are accepted, ensuring a straightforward transaction for everyday tea snacks or treats to share.
